7. USE OF GRAMMAR IN FUNCTIONAL WRITING

When the structural view of language is questioned and emphasized on the functional view of language, the
structural units of language tends to vary and change. Hence an English learner is subjected to adopt any language
variation that is accustomed in any discipline. Though the learners confess that they face difficulty in learning
listening and speaking skills and are good in reading and writing skills, it is not true so. Letter and email writing are
the most miserable part of written composition in secondary and tertiary level language education. Students
generally lack in framing format and content as they are not good in logically sequencing ideas in paragraphs with
adequate discourse and cohesion. In response to an email and for confirming the booking of seminar hall and
arranging lunch, a student has written –
Dear Paul,
Thanks for ur kind information. We confirm the booking on 17

in a clearful way, this is my kind request. It was attended by 12 to15 members , I think so. They are all from reputed
firms. The lunch arrangements should be very good. The menu was containing two types of variety rices and curd

drinks. Other things are explained by our Convenor.
Thankyou,

The above short email is just a sample where it can be generally noticed how the students need to be well
trained to use appropriate grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation in written discourse. Students seem to be
less confident in writing compositions and hence they lack sufficient preparation for writing letters, emails, essays,
reports and comprehensions. They need to plan, prepare and practice their original compositions with appropriate
syntax, vocabulary, meaning and style. While understanding the purpose of writing the text with good organization
and coherence of thoughts and ideas, one can excel in composition writing skills (Alsaawi, 2016; Bublitz, 2011).
Language pedagogy should be ingrained with moderate use of structural framework where they can utilize ELT
resources found on the internet. Textbooks and handouts should be designed to comply with the teaching and testing
of spoken and written grammar.
English learners ought to use English according to their relevant disciplines and to the demand of technology
(Ahmadi, 2018; Dudeney & Hockly, 2007; Eaton, 2010; Foyewa, 2015). The language of structural, functional and
interactional view distinctly varies and nothing could impede the influence of one view on another. Hence an
English learner is ought to use English according to the use of relevant disciplines in context to the varied forms of
structural, functional and interactional view of language. The process of both learning and acquiring a language
could be endowed to the pertained study of language components and its models. When the language is put into use,
the distinctive forms of language components could be easily acquired on par with its interdependence on
communication acts. Sometimes, both professionals and learned masses uses those sentences, where one could
witness some improbabilities of structural components modified for the sake of relevant functional and technical
use. The following meeting agenda is a case study on the functional use of English in academic contexts –
 20
th
the IAT is starting.
 ISO files have to be updated.
 Monday 1
st
assignment questions should be given to I year students.
 For the IAT test the seating arrangement and invigilation schedule has to be finalized.
 Time table has to be revised from March 1
st
onwards.
 In the regular time table schedule the library and the internet hours should be included.
 Time table finalization must be made for the even semester subject allocation should be done based on the
staff availability.
 The second semester reopening on 6
th
Feb.
 Actuals for internal mark should be prepared. It based on attendance, assignments and tests. After that it
can be moderated if needed.
 The conduct of each student should be good and befitting the status of an engineering student.
The Mother Tongue Influence (MTI) and the Social Influences (SI) have the immediate impact on speaking
rather more on writing. Students try to think in their mother tongue and they reproduce the same idea in the formal
language. Hence, they need to search adequate words to relate it into the meaning and to express their ideas in a
better way. Students possess little time and knowledge to identify the appropriate vocabulary and to frame a
meaningful sentence with good grammar. While undertaking speaking and writing tasks, they lack spontaneous
outflow of generating good ideas and their information needs to be sparked immediately for meaningful
communication.
