9. USE OF ABBREVIATIONS AND ACRONYMS IN SOCIAL MEDIA
The use of chat slang is seen in both speaking and writing. The informal use of abbreviations and acronyms has
reinvented a new Chaucerian era in the twenty first century. One happens to reread to comprehend the little message
given in their mixed slang. One needs to rub his/her forehead to learn the new spelling, meaning and vocabulary of
the given information. Learners need to understand the meaning of a word according to the given situational

contexts and should be familiar with the new trends of word knowledge. They are in need to compulsorily learn and
increase their vocabulary skills found in social networking sites like Facebook, Whats App and IMO chatting
(Alsaleem, 2014; Androutsopoulos, 2015; Farina & Liddy, 2011; Khan, Ayaz, & Faheem, 2016; Thurairaj. Hoon,
Roy, & Fong, 2015). But one thing that draws the entire attention is their becoming fond of chat slang for instant
communication. They develop their own register and style. It can be noticed that spelling and pronunciation disorder
in vocabulary is one of the predominant features found in chat slang.
