(i) Formative Assessment Effectively Embedded in Lesson Plans and
Learning Activities
Black and Wiliam’s (1998) definition of assessment includes all activities
that teachers and learners engage in to get information that can be used to adapt
teaching and learning to meet student needs. Example 1 illustrates how
reference to a past learning event (RPLE), which is defined as the formative
assessment act which “occurs when the teacher contingently extends the main
instructional activity by focusing on language items, structures or topics which
were presented in a past learning event (Can Daşkın & Hatipoğlu, 2019a, p.
17), can be used to check whether or not students are ready for the introduction
of a topic which is at least partially based on material previously discussed in
class. RPLE can be used at the beginning, middle and/or end of a lesson with
students with all proficiency levels. Such noticeably short and efficient
exercises can serve as checkpoints and traffic lights guiding teachers to plan
their next steps in the most beneficial way for the students.
