2.3.1 Muhammed Sherool


It is obvious that behind the developmental process of Kasaragod, we can see the role of some major versatile leaders who tried to fulfill this into reality. Like the famous leader Sherool and Izzuddeen Musliyar. It is incomplete to continue the history of Kasaragod without mentioning them and their contributions. Muhammed Sherool is one of these important personalities, who had made a great impact on the history of Kasaragod Muslims. In addition, it is believed that although he was reformer he was an innovator (mubtadi)50. He extended out his services in all fields both religious and material by building educational institutions and schools. He worked for political, educational, and social rights of Muslims.

He was born in 1879 September and he was settled in Angadimugaru in Puttige.51 Among his community, he is known in verity of attributiosn like nation enthusiast, freedom fighter, and educational reformer, despite it he was a landowner. Many territories were under this family. This place was Muslim populated areas. There was no need of polices and soldiers to keep the peace in surrounding areas of him, but his numerous servants and helpers were sufficient to implement his orders and ideas. Because all legal disputes were solved in this house.

He conducted the historical conference of khilafat movement of dakshina Kannada. 52 He has a great role in popularizing the Islamic education among Muslims. In the history, he is known as the Abdurrahmān second. 53 It was he, to build the first school in Kasaragod district near his native Angadi Mugaru and he built a special school for anglers. After his enormous and valuable contributions and services he was died in 1937 April.

2.3.2 T. Ubaid and his reformative actions


T.Ubaid was one of the glorious personalities of Kasaragod, who was the schoolmaster of C.M Usthād. He was among the eminent reformer who tried for Muslim’s social and cultural development. He was born in Pallikkal at Kasaragod, -October 7- 1908, as the son of Alikunchi and Zainaba. They both were Mappila poets.

He got his primary education from Kasaragod town board higher elementary school and higher education from Kasaragod Basal Mission Higher School. Unlike other scholars, he was an ideal leader. He studied Islamic rituals and teachings from his father who was his first teacher then went to madrasa for further studies.

His father was expert in Malayalam language and Ubaid studied at a Kannada medium school, so he exploited his father well to study Malayalam. He was an expert Qāri’54 who studied well to recite Qurān properly by regarding the rules and regulations of Tajwīd. He was expert in Urdu Arābic Malayalam and Kannada; he studied up to 10th.Then he entered in teaching field. In 1927, he became teacher at Muizzu al-Isalm school. He wrote the book about Abdulla Hāji, (former Qāḍi of Kasaragod) in his 15th age despite, he was a famous Mappila poet.55

He tried to strengthen the Dakshina Kannada and Kasaragod Muslims by giving them proper education. For this purpose, he tried his best and approached every important persons seeking support of them to his effort. Thus this versatile leader departure from this world in 1972 when he was delivering a speech in Arābic teacher’s seminar at Talangara School.

2.4 HISTORY OF KIYOOR

From the historical period of Kasaragod, Kiyoor made a great role in reviving the history of Kasaragod, which is considered as one of the famous Islamic hub of Kasaragod.56 This was latterly witnessed to many of reformative works of CM Usthad. It situates in south part of Chandragiri River. It had beared a great role in renaissance of Kasaragod. The dars systems and the great scholars of this area had a great role in developing north Malabar, socially, culturally, and spiritually.

Kiyoor which situates east to Chandragiri River is a historically represetive place.Within 18th century the history of Islamic activities of Kasaragod witnessed a new phase of progress by the progress of kiyoor and it was introduced as the “oasis of Islamic knowledge and Ponnāni of North Malabar57 because many scholars who lived there tried their best to make change it as ismic hub of education. Now this place include some major place like Chaliyangod, Kadavath, Oravangara, Payangadi, Madathil, Padinjar, etc. it is believed that Islam reached in Kiyoor at the same time, when it was reached in Kasaragod, but there is no sound proof or evidence stating this fact.

Kiyoor has a vast heritage of famous scholars like Saīd Musliyar, Ibrahīm Musliyar, Al- Hāj Abdulla Musliyar, Aulagi Tahngal, Kunchippa Hāji Musliyar and later these mosques were considered as the centres of education by spreading the Islamic teachings through these darses like Orvangara, Kadavath, and Payakota. The students from out of Kerala also, reached here to study.58 Many pious and rich leaders of this region played a major role in maintaining these dars by contributing their valuable properties and lands to mosques as endowment properties.

2.5 CONTEMPORARY SCHOLARS OF C.M USTHĀD

2.5.1 T.K.M Bava Musliyar


The eminent scholar and ex Kasaragod Qāḍi T.K.M Bava Musliyar (Tondikodan Muhiyaddīn Musliyar) was born into a scholarly family in 1930 July- 21 at Velimukk as the son of Palliarmattil Fāthima in Malappuram and Bīrān Musliyar. His father was a famous scholar and Khatīb59 of Parambilpeediga.

He studied the holy Qur’an from Alavi Musliyar. Then in 12th year, he joined in Parappanangadi Panaya Dars under the Usthad Kāmu Musliyar, then studied from several scholars like Paravanna Muhiyaddīn Musliyar and joined in Arikkod Vilayil Kottu Mala Kungeethu Musliyrar’s dars.

He was an active member of Samastha Mushavara and he became general secretary of educational board of Samastha in 1989 Feb-21. The then total number of madrasa run under educational board of Samatha before he was elected as general secretary was 6078 then after he was elected it was increased and in his last time, it reached into 9269. He brought many developments in educational board like public exam for 10th and plus two classes of Madrasa. Thus the dearest Qāḍi passed away in 16-06- 2013.60
