SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
With guest curator, Joyce Grimm, this year’s faculty art triannual, STEAMED, will feature works that explore the realms of art in connection with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (S.T.E.M.).
THE THEME: In celebration of the opening of the LoSchiavo Center for Science and Innovation, all of this year’s gallery exhibitions touch on ideas involving the sciences. In the spirit of experimentation, we wanted to see what would happen if we extended this theme into the faculty show. While a simple premise and one that seems wide open for interpretation, it is meant as a challenge to explore the intersection of art and the sciences. While we strongly encourage this investigation and will focus on this in the curatorial content for STEAMED, submissions do not have to fit into the theme to be accepted.
ABOUT THE CURATOR: Joyce Grimm is currently the Creative Program Consultant for Manresa Gallery located inside St. Ignatius Church on the USF campus. Manresa focuses on contemporary art and the promotion of Interfaith Dialogue. Grimm was the Co-Owner/ Director of Triple Base Gallery from 2005-2011 and has taught in the MFA program at California College of the Arts and Portland State.
Grimm is interested in the exploration of art and how it intersects with other fields of study. She builds exhibitions and programs as a way to support creative thinkers, problem solve on a large scale, and strengthen community knowledge. As a curator she’s conducted lectures, exhibitions, and public programming for the Andy Warhol Foundation, Pie Ranch, the Museum of Craft and Folk Art, UCLA, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, LACMA, Arts Initiative Tokyo, California College of the Arts, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver, Colorado.
While directing Triple Base, Grimm curated exhibitions for the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery and was the lead curator for San Francisco's first Art in Storefronts Program. Grimm received her Masters in Curatorial Practice from California College of the Arts in 2006.
ELIGIBILITY: Full-time and part-time faculty teaching in the Department of Art + Architecture during fall 2013 and spring 2014.
WHAT TO SUBMIT: Participants may submit up to 3 artworks for consideration. At least one work will be selected from each artist. A series will be considered, but may be limited due to space issues. All mediums are welcome, including (but not limited to) digital media, sound, architecture, design, sculpture, painting, drawing, collaborative projects, and works-in-progress if the format is fit for exhibition.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Monday, November 11, 2013
SUBMISSION PROCESS: This year we are introducing an ON-LINE image submission process via KAPSUL. We will need both your images and the form in order to consider your submission.
A Submission Form is included here and is also available as in the “TEXTS” section of the KAPSUL. Please complete the submission form, along with your artist statement, and send it to simmons@usfca.edu as an email attachment. We have chosen to use a simple word form so that you can easily fill it out and we can easily transfer your text to our labels. Please include your name, artwork titles and artist statement as you want them to appear on the labels. Your artist statement should be 50 to 150 words in first-person. If your work touches on the STEAMED issues, please refer to these in your statements. Artist statements will accompany artworks when installed.
In addition, Joyce has requested additional text in the form of a response to each of the following questions:
1. What is your favorite artwork to date?

2. What inspires you?

3. How do you view your work? Do you see it as solving any particular problem or bridging any particular ideas that are notable?
Preparation of artwork images: Create digital images of your work at 1024x768 at 300 dpi. Video and sound must be uploaded to Vimeo or YouTube in order to upload. See special instructions below for websites. (Contact us if you have questions about alternative formats.)
Upload Artworks: To submit images, go to www.kapsul.org and search for the “STEAMED – University of San Francisco” KAPSUL. (If you would like to follow our KAPSUL, create a profile. Or to learn more, watch the introductory video.)
To upload, go to the use the ADD+ button and select the icon with your format (IMAGE, VIDEO, LINK) on the menu. From here, you can upload your file.
Text Box: When the upload is complete, you will see the submission and a text box. Please fill this out completely. (It contains much of the same information as your submission form.)
Artist: First, Last

Title: of the artwork

Year: the year that the artwork was completed

Medium: materials (for digital prints, perhaps include software used to create it)

Dimensions: use inches, width x height

Notes: If needed, include special instructions/information such as “work-in-progress,” “first in series of three,” “collaborative work; other artists include...”
Websites: Please select an image from your website and upload it as an IMAGE , including all of the information in the text box. In the Notes, include the URL to your site. In addition, upload your site through the LINK button.
Collaborative works: Include names of all other artists in notes and on the submission form.
Series and books: Series are accepted. Please provide a digital image of all works together with full information in the text box. You may also submit detail images. Make note of this in the Notes section. Space is limited; series may be “curated” to a smaller selection. For books, provide an image(s) of the best spread(s). Let us know if you want these under cover or out to be handled.
Works-in-Progress: Submit an image if possible. In the Notes section, include an explanation that will help the jury understand your completed piece.
SELECTION PROCESS: Joyce Grimm will select at least one, and up to three, artworks from each artist. Email notification of selected works will be sent to you in late November.
ARTWORK PREP AND DELIVERY: Selected works must be completed, prepared for installation, and delivered to the gallery by 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014.
The gallery has numerous flat cases, vitrines, pedestals, and Plexiglas frame systems available. Because of the quick turnaround of the exhibits and our location in the library, we avoid nailing directly into the walls and ceilings whenever possible. We have a sliding wire system for traditional wall pieces that requires a frame with a wire across the back. We also have a mounted mac mini/projector system and one wide-screen IMac with a pedestal. We will be in touch with artists about their individual needs.

Art Drop-Off Period: Monday and Tuesday, January 6 and 7, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Exhibition Dates: Jan. 21-Mar. 2, 2014

Opening Event: TBA

Other events: Thacher Thursdays 12-1 p.m. starting in Feb with tours 2/6, 2/20. Second Thursday pop-up on 2/13; "Momentum: Women/Art/Technology,” Thursday, Feb. 20, late afternoon; and Final Thursday chamber music on 2/27.
