ABSTRACT
This study discusses the concept of sustainable development and İPAT, ImPACT and STIRPAT model frameworks wich relates environment protection - one of the important elements of sustainable development concept - with another elements of that concept – economic growth and social factors. It has been noted that deterministic nature of IPAT and ImPACT frameworks restricts their wide application in empirical studies in order to estimate relationships between environmental impacts, affluence, population and technology. To overcome the gaps of the IPAT and ImPACT models Dietz and Rosa developed STIRPAT model on the base of above mentioned models which enables to estimate both stochastic and nonproportional relationships. Study also explains the meaning of ecological elasticity coefficients in the STIRPAT framework and appropriate applicable exlplanatory and explained variables.
Keywords: Sustainable development, İPAT, ImPACT, STIRPAT, Ecological footprint
