THE COLLAPSE PROCESS OF THE USSR

SUMMARY
In the 80s of the XX century, the Soviet Union faced a socio-economic and political
crisis. In March 1985, M.S.Gorbachev was elected the new leader of
the Soviet Union and his
voluntaristic policy deepened the crisis. Tensions and conflicts between nations of the USSR
increased, in some regions there were armed clashes. The draft of the New Union Treaty,
initiated by M.S.Gorbachev for the salvation of the Soviet Union, and August 1991 coup
attempt by conservative forces were not successful. On December 8, 1991, the leaders of
Russia, Ukraine and Belorussia announced the establishment of the Commonwealth of
Independent States, and thus put an end to the existence of the USSR.
