Introduction
There is no doubt that online education is one alternate way of teaching and learning nowadays. The global pandemic has boosted the need for virtual teaching systems in the COVID-19 outbreak. The discontinuation of traditional face-to-face education endured for a longer time than expected, thus, schools had to continue the process online. Although schools, colleges, and universities were back to the way of traditional education after the pandemic, the online teaching and learning system has been used occasionally in different circumstances, because of its several conveniences in schools. The popularity and the constant use of online education have been the reason for numerous research on the benefits of virtual teaching in recent years, but the negative effects still need to be explored thoroughly, especially in schools. In this case study the negative effects of online teaching, such as the academic challenges, the side effects of screen-based education on the health of people, and technological problems like disparities in the gadgets or internet, have been explored and discussed.
The academic challenges in online education.
Technological breakthroughs ease education without ceasing it. It gave us certain opportunities, such as the low cost of expenditure of education, excessing in any time to the classes and so on. However, it has some adverse effects based on academic acquisition. The existing research shows a significant decrease has shown in the acquisition of lessons after long-term virtual learning. The decrease in the scores of the students and their performance was higher among primary and secondary school students. The reasons for the low quality of the progress of school children are interconnected with some facts that they can face to lack of understanding of the theme in prerecorded lessons because of the absence of hands-off activities, engagement of other students while learning new skills, and teachers’ interpretation while the lessons. When I interviewed middle school teachers, they admitted that they faced these aspects while conducting online lessons during the school’s closure period. They added that this type of teaching may affect the communication skills of students because school children cannot perform their abilities and are too shy to speak out during the live lessons, moreover, it can decrease the output of the students due to the lack of motivation and guidance of the teachers. Indeed, school children are young enough to cope with time management and to improve independent study skills which are essential qualities required in online learning. In this point, the supportive teachers’ presence is crucial in terms of assisting and motivating young children in an online school lesson. The possible solutions to the challenges of academic progress can be reached by improving the teaching methods and reshaping curriculums and materials regarding the online way of education.
The health issues during online education.
Virtual education can lead to mental health problems such as high levels of stress and frustration, feelings of isolation, and boredom. How can the level of stress increase during online education? According to the previously conducted research, when people come to a new and unknown situation, they feel a high level of stress. Other scholars claim that when high performance and good results are demanded, a high level of stress and frustration is determined in people. Thus, the combination of these factors intervenes in the process of online education among school children when they are provided with virtual lessons. According to the educators, the students began to feel less comfortable and bored during online learning due to the isolation of other children. This is another negative feeling that children come across. When the stress level rises gradually and is not treated properly, the consequences can be frustration and boredom. Furthermore, the next stage is burnout which is detected both among students and teachers who are involved in online education frequently. The further side effect of computer-based education is related to the addiction to virtual reality. Since children are the most naïve creatures in this world, virtual reality can hinder their real-life abilities, and influence their imaginations of life. Regarding the feasible solution for mental health problems, that can be tackled by adding extra courses in psychology or online teaching of physical activities that help to cope with stress.
The technological problems.
In this technology era, we have plenty of opportunities thanks to various novel gadgets as well as internet connections. With their help, we can conduct online lessons, but we have to admit that with frequent disparities in technologies or connections, we can lose chances to participate in some lessons. Besides, in schools, not all children have technology literacy or cannot use certain platforms that are used in the process of distance learning. In addition, it is not a secret that all parents can provide every child with the latest technological advances. This can lead to a lack of presence in lessons sometimes. Illiteracy leads to the next obstacle that can be investigated in the usage of gadgets or educational applications and some platforms. Even though the young generation has great potential to learn and utilize modern mechanisms, some educational platforms need to make extra effort for some students to learn how to use them. Having a lot of distractions during online lessons breeds another issue on this matter. For example, if the attention of students is drawn away from what they are learning, as a result, the progress in comprehension decreases. That is considered the most significant point during distance learning by many educators. If the demand for online education is like to increase the staff of schools and all children who should be involved in the process have to be fully equipped in that period. By this, I mean that the laptops or tablets, and the internet connection should be in each student as well as teachers. What is more, the technology literacy lessons should be conducted before the online lessons, for this, experimental lessons can be taken by students in every academic year in case of unexpected situations.
To conclude, education is an indispensable part of each society as well as the most crucial one to shape children's competitive individuals for a sustainable future in a globalized world. A lot of investigations and studies carried out in this sphere until now. The most famous and modern topic in this field is online education in recent years. However, one research did not include all the negative sides of the topic in detail in the past as it is impracticable. Now I am unveiling the most mentioned problems related to virtual and distance education. The academic problems resulting from the low chance of involvement or engagement with teachers or other students, the disconnections or technology-related obstacles, and the side effects on the mental health of the people of online education are cases in point. To tackle these issues not only educators or policymakers in this sphere should focus on the solutions, but also all parents and other people who feel responsibility to the future of the country should contribute the liable results. Regarding the implementation of the technology for the entire class or school, everybody should take responsibility for sustainable future.
