COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF KOREAN WORDS WITH TURKISH
WORDS IN TERMS OF MEANING RELATIONS
Abstract
One of the most important things in foreign language acquisition is vocabulary.
Vocabulary acquisition is a life-long process both in native and foreign languages. In a
foreign language, one does not have huge problems in communicating without a thorough
knowledge of the grammatical rules; yet, the speaker cannot convey his intentions to the
listener(s) without required vocabulary. For this reason, the majority of problems in foreign
language acquisition stems from an inadequacy of vocabulary.
Korean is a highly rich language in terms of vocabulary. Polysemy, synonymy and
homophony are common element of it. Besides, there are trademark aspects of Korean
vocabulary that distinguishes it from many other languages. Words indicating respect, those
of Chinese origin, other words having the same spelling and meaning though they have the
same pronunciation are some of the signs of the idiosyncrasy of Korean language.

The richness of vocabulary in Korean language causes huge problems for the
learners of it as a foreign language. The true and efficient vocabulary acquisition of Korean
language is only possible through a thorough knowledge of the word formations and
semantic relations.
Thus, the aim of this article is to analyze the word formations in Korean in detail
and, then, to compare and contrast them with Turkish words in terms of semantic relations.
As the starting point of this comparison, Turkish students who are learning Korean as a
foreign language will be focused.
Keywords:
Turkish words, Korean words, Korean vocabulary structure, meaning
relations between words, honorific form, polysemy, homophony, synonymy, antonymy
