Ten Suggestions for Your Michigan Library to

Promote Consumer Health Information Excellence

  1. Link to MedlinePlus - Make sure that your library website prominently displays MedlinePlus medlineplus.gov. This is the “Go-To” place for authoritative, up-to-date, easy-to-read, full-text and non-commercial consumer health information. There’s no need to have a long list of sites, as MedlinePlus will already link to the best anyway.

  1. – Use the colorful logo on your website for MedlinePlus. Download an image from Linking to MedlinePlus www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/linking.html

  1. Link to Michigan Go Local - Make sure your library website also provides a link to Michigan Go Local medlineplus.gov/MI. MGL is an online directory to health services in Michigan, also searchable by zip code or health topic, and links to MedlinePlus. Over 12,000 records (and growing) are in the database; entries are indexed by health terms, verified and routinely updated by medical librarians.

  1. - Add the Michigan Go Local logo to your library’s website. Save this image or email migolocal@wayne.edu and ask us to send it to you.

  1. Free MGL Flyer – Print flyers for your community library patrons located at this web link www.lib.wayne.edu/shiffman/migolocal/migolocal.pdf

  1. Get Free MedlinePlus Magazine - Subscribe to the NIH MedlinePlus Magazine for your library, at no charge www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/magazine. It’s both paper and electronic. Individuals may also subscribe for home delivery, by print requests or order online from the MedlinePlus website.

  1. Join the GMR – Become a member of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Great Midwest Region (NN/LM GMR). Membership is free and has many benefits for any library that provides access to health information. nnlm.gov/gmr/member

  1. Get Free Promotional Items – GMR member libraries can order MedlinePlus bookmarks, pens, etc. as marketing materials nnlm.gov/gmr/member/promo/promo_materials.html

  1. Schedule Health Talks - Contact local health services (hospitals, health departments, etc.) and invite them to present at your library. Develop a calendar for adult services or a Speakers Bureau with a Consumer Health Information theme. Use Michigan Go Local to locate community resources.

  1. Get $$$$ - Apply for funds to develop a Consumer Health Information project at your library – a variety of funding levels are available to libraries that are members of the Greater Midwest Region nnlm.gov/gmr/funding
