You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Write about the following topic:
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own
knowledge
or experience.

The number of internet users around the world has risen from just under two billion
in 2010 to over five billion today. That is a rise from around 28% of the global popula-
tion being online to almost 65%.
Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?

A wide range of vocabulary is
used accurately and appropri-
ately, shown by skillful para-
phrasing of information from
the prompt.
Task Response:
A clear position is presented
which directly answers the
question. This position is fully
developed through the body
paragraphs.
Coherence & Cohesion:
Paragraphing is skilfully man-
aged, with separate para-
graphs for the introduction,
the two main arguments in the
body, and the conclusion.
Coherence & Cohesion:
The message can be followed
effortlessly due to the use
of reference words such as
‘these’, which allows the writing
to flow without unnecessary
repetition.
Task Response:
Ideas are relevant, fully ex-
tended and well supported.
The candidate provides two
clear ways in which increased
internet usage is ‘bridging
gaps between individuals and
cultures’. Each is extended
and supported with examples
(strengthening family relation-
ships) or effects (serving as a
catalyst for social and political
change).

trove of ...’ is a fixed phrase
used in a natural and sophisti-
cated way here.
Grammatical Range &
Accuracy:
Punctuation and grammar are
used appropriately. This is a
complex sentence with the
appropriate verb tense (‘has
allowed’), use of a participle
clause (‘making it accessi-
ble’) and an adverbial phrase
(‘regardless of geographical
location’), with commas accu-
rately used throughout.

phrasing of information from
the prompt.
Coherence & Cohesion:
Paragraphing is skillfully man-
aged. Each paragraph contains
one main idea or argument,
