Coastal

Walkway

BESIDE THE SEASIDE

If you do like to be beside the

seaside, then head to the New

Plymouth Coastal Walkway.

This award-winning 13km walk

stretches almost the entire length

of New Plymouth and provides an

up-close Tasman Sea experience

along an attractive paved

promenade.

You can walk, jog, cycle or skate while

you take in the sights and there’s a

lot more to see besides the sea. If

you start from the east, you’ll walk

alongside the New Plymouth Golf Club

and visit surf beaches at Fitzroy and

East End. Here you can digress and

meander up the Te Henui Walkway,

or you may prefer to take a break at

one of the picnic tables at the East End

playground.

On the walkway is the eye-catching

Te Rewa Rewa Bridge, a shared

pedestrian and cycling bridge over

the city’s Waiwhakaiho River. It has

won numerous international design

awards, including ‘Best Bridge in the

World 2011’, so be sure to check it out

when Mt Taranaki is in view so you can

take a postcard-perfect photo! Stone

carvings and other public art are also

of interest on the foreshore. You

can explore the walkway on a Wind

Wanderer pedal bike, available for hire

from the walkway itself.

F

or peace and solitude, head to Pukekura Park in central New

Plymouth. This is an exceptional example of an urban space

developed over decades into a national icon.

One of Taranaki’s five-star rated gardens, the park is a 52ha haven of native

bush with a glorious lake and is adjacent to Brooklands Park with its natural

amphitheatre music bowl and zoo.

The New Plymouth district, in fact, boasts 100 parks and reserves, 13 official

beaches, 60km of walkways and myriad other tucked-away spots for quiet

contemplation. At night, try Devon St for dinner and entertainment. The

range of options covers all tastes and there’s plenty to choose from.

Mt Taranaki

Mt Taranaki and Egmont

National Park have more than

200km of walking tracks and

over 300,000 outdoor enthusiasts

visit its slopes every year to

enjoy the clear streams, mystical

forests and breathtaking views.

There is a range of tracks from

a 15-minute jaunt to a three- to

five-day hike around the mountain.

Climbing to the summit is popular

in the summer months, but it’s

recommended only for the fit and

well-prepared as it takes five hours

to ascend and three hours to

descend.

PLEASE BE

WARNED:

Mt Taranaki is renowned not

only for its beauty, but also

for its ever-changing weather.
