Reading Guide 9 L2 Grammar Mirjalol Xo\'jamurodov 140

While or after reading:

3. Dimensions of grammar are discussed from pp. 258-261. Read this part carefully and answer the questions below.

  1. Describe the three dimensions of grammar using your own words. Do not copy the sentences directly from the chapter.

Your answer: After reading about grammar rules, we have informed that there are three dimensions of grammar teaching. The first one is form or structure, In each lesson teacher teaches a grammar rule first he or she shows how to form this sentences take Teaching of modal verbs as an example first teacher shows the form of it and the second thing is meaning or semantics of grammar, in this sense teacher explains the meaning of modal verb it means to have ability on something and the third thing is use of this grammar rule ,in order to teach teacher explains in what situations or contexts it is used.

  1. In your learning/teaching context, which dimension is the most highlighted in your learning/teaching context?

Your answer: : While I am teaching English grammar I try to mainly focus on the use of grammar rule because as long as they know the form and the meaning of the rule but cannot use it in practice it is useless to teach grammar rule because most learners learn language in order to communicate.

  1. Conversely, what is the least emphasized dimension of grammar in a typical grammar lesson in your learning/teaching context and why do you think that is the case?

Your answer: I don’t pay attention to the meaning mostly because knowing the meaning of any grammar rule not all the time help learners to use it in language use . Althouh, knowing meaning cannot fully guarantee language communication in second language.

4. Three different approaches to grammar teaching are discussed from pp. 262-265. Read this part carefully and answer the questions below.

  1. Which one of the three approaches is commonly used in the classrooms in Uzbekistan? What are some benefits of that approach?

Your answer: Nowadays in Uzbek schools most lessons are based on teaching with PPP approach is commonly used and in this teaching approach. First, learners are taught grammar rule then it will consolidated by oral drill or grammar exercise and in the third phase they put it into use. I think this approach is helping our learners to learn language effectively and quickly as after teaching any grammar rule , teachers is consolidating it by exercises or drills and learners are using at that time .

  1. Describe benefits of Grammaring using your own words. Do not copy the sentences directly from the chapter.

Your answer: I think grammar is very important goal for learners because most learners just learn cram grammar rules and use it unconsciously as a result they make a number of mistakes if they know what grammar is ,they will use grammar constructions without any mistake . it help them to understand that grammar is not only knowing form but also knowing meaning and appropriate use of it.

5. Ways to promote explicit grammar instruction are described on pp.265-266. Read this part carefully and answer the question: Which one of the tasks can be adapted in your own grammar lesson and how might you implement the task?

Your answer: I think choosing one of these tasks depends on what theme we want to teach but the most suitable for the each grammar lesson is garden path strategy . So I will change garden path task to teach grammar in my grammar lesson. , I want to teach passive voice so as to do that I will tell some of the rules concerning to passive voice first , after that I give general view about passive voice, by using this task learners go from easy to complex and learners keeps this rule easily in their mind.

6. The effect of the native language on L2 learning has traditionally been seen to be one of interference. How does the observation on p.261 regarding learners’ reliance on their prior knowledge and experience differ in its perception of L1 influence?

Your answer: While learning second language beginner learners lean on their L1 perception because they do not know anything about target language , regarding schema and past experience do not vary from L1 perception as learners some point use their prior knowledge as learning second language.

7. What is one thing that stood out from this chapter that you want to apply to your own teaching? Discuss specifically what you found useful for your current or future teaching.

Your answer: I used to teach grammar from grammar books but I think in my future teaching grammar I will use explicit grammar instruction tasks because by the help of these tasks I can effectively teach any grammar rule . Furthermore, these tasks are motivating so learners will never get bored. For instance, take corpora-informed task if I add this task in my current teaching process learners will learn extra information about the theme.
