there was such toponym
Zeda Zadeni
. If toponym
Zedazeni
is indeed associated with deity
Zaden
,
we can
assume that it originates from
“Zeda Zadeni”
(“Upper Zaden”)
and this provides basis to offer that once there
existed the toponym
“Kveda Zadeni”
(“Lower Zaden”)
…
Unlike the researchers, in whose opinion, Asomtavruli was created in 5
th
century (this is mostly assumed
because, in their opinion, there are not maintained any earlier written sources), Ivane Javakhishvili, Pavle
Ingorokva, Ramaz Pataridze and many other scientists, relying on paleography, historical situation and other
data, regard that Asomtavruli alphabet was created much earlier than Christianity (according to Javakhishvili,
it was created inVII century BC (Javakhishvili, 229). Georgian historical source
“Kartlis Tskhovreba”
(
“A
History /Life/ of Georgia”
) attributes creation of Georgian alphabet to
Parnavaz,
the first king of Kartli, in
about IV-III
centuries BC (according to the Georgian Chronicles, further, Parnavaz
became the first king of
united Georgia). According to this source:
“Parnavaz was the first king of Kartli from the Kartlos family. He
propagated the Georgian language. And the peoples of Kartli did not talk other languages besides Georgian
anymore. He also created Georgian writing”
(Kartlis Tskhovreba 2014, 25; Kartlis Tskhovreba 1955, 36).
Pavle Ingorokva regarded that in the period of reign of Parnavaz the alphabet existing before was reformed
(Ingorokva, 250). We share this view and, in this regard, we would like to pay attention to the information
from Georgian written source
“Matiane Shemetsnebata”
(“Chronicles of Cognitions”),
according to which,
forefathers of Georgians had the alphabet before Parnavaz and it was used by the priests of pagan temple;
according
to this information, Parnavaz has brought this alphabet into secular use (information about
“Chronicles of Cognitions”/
this written source has been lost /
was provided by
Teimuraz Bagrationi,
the
historian working in XVIII-XIX centuries, who has seen the mentioned book containing the above information;
Sharadze, 122-127). Naturally, in studying of these issues, the attention is always focused on the materials
gained by Academician
Levan Chilashvili,
in archeological excavations in the city of
Nekresi,
Eastern Georgia.
In the researcher’s opinion, on
these materials, there are the Georgian inscriptions of the pre-Christian epoch.
Inscriptions were found on the stone slabs and one – on the fragment of the vessel (Chilashvili 2000, 16-24;
Chilashvili 2004).
Pavle Ingorokva read certain Georgian letters on the vessels and stele of the pagan period. On the vessel,
there was in Greek mentioned such person –
Bersoumа
Pityakhsh (Bidaxš)
and there are characters shaped
similar to Asomtavruli
bani
